WorldCup Official Broadcaster
World cup has ended with France comes up as winner. There
are some though that I want to express even though the cup has ended: the way I
consume it.
Years ago, I watch all the match on free to air television.
Lots of advertising before, during and after the match. The advertiser/sponsor
held many “nonton bareng” (watching match together) in many place, to increase brand
awareness and impact.
However, for this year Wold Cup, things a bit different.
Instead of watching it on TV, I watch it on my phone via streaming. There are
some reasons:
- - Abundance of bandwidth. I subscribe on FTTH with 50mbps bandwidth. So streaming on phone which require around 2mbps is just nothing.
- - Free quota if watching it on supported provider. Hell yeah
- - Most of the time, I watching it alone. So, watching it big screen TV a bit overkill. Ymmv
- - World cup only available in FTA TV, not in cable/satellite/IPTV, as my TV only attached to cable, it is “too much” effort to make WC available on my TV
- - The WC streaming subscription is quite cheap. Ymmv
- - I can watch it on my computer as well. So I can do multitasking while watching the match.
KlixTV. World cup streaming provider which I used. They partner with XL-Axiata
Max Stream. KlixTV alternative. Provided by Telkomsel
I quite enjoy the new experience will surely do it again in
the next World Cup. Even I tempted to cancel my cable TV provided which broadcast
English Premier League (EPL) and to watch it on the phone instead.
Bein Connect. Providing EPL streaming even for daily basis
So, considering my experience above, I have some hypothesis.
Please do challenge me on this
- - With
bandwidth become more affordable, World Cup, or event in particular, will
be more mainstream.
- - Free
to air event broadcast is dying. Due to hefty amount of cost to have FTV
broadcast right and combined with less and less people watching it on TV
- - Pay per view/match is no the rise. On this year world cup, I pay for the entire event even though I only watch some part of it. Why pay something that you will not watch?
Very interesting to watch what will happen next. Comments?
