So you want to visit Europe huh? Unless you have a lot of money and free time, you better plan carefully. Let’s start with very basic question. The time to go there.
- Visit in Winter. Ticket/hotel cost is kind of cheap (except during Christmas and New Year) and Europe has different atmosphere especially during XMas. However, you have limited sightseeing time due to sun rise quite late and set very fast. So you might only have 9AM-5PM sun time. Your mobility during night time will be limited. If you have money and want to see Europe during XMas, this is the time to go.
- Visit during Autumn/Fall. Ticket/hotel normal price. Normal sun time. Tourist attraction also not very crowded. This is IMHO the best time (value for money) to go to Europe
- Visit in Summer. Ticket/hotel will be expensive. Lot of sun time, you have plenty of time to do sightseeing. Tourist attraction also very crowded. If money does not concern you, this is the time to go.
Next, where to go in Europe? Initially, I thought this is important question as this will be decide how my itinerary will. However, later on, this question is not very essential as the can travel to almost everywhere in Europe using LCC with relatively cheap price. Provided that you don’t have a lot of luggage with you. I travel with wife and 1 children for two week with just one checked luggage. I might write separate post on how to achieve this. So regarding first destination (landing), just find the cheapest one you can get. Or you can arrive at Turkey and then continue to Europe. Two bird with one stone.
Next is how long. I would say for two weeks is the best one. Reason being:
- One week is off course too short unless its business travel
- Two weeks (depart on day 1 and leave on day 14) is usually the limit for “cheap ticket”. Once you set more than two weeks, than the ticket price will be more expensive
- 3-4 weeks. If you more money and have enough annual leave, go for this one. You will really embrace Europe.
- > 4weeks. This is for people who want to “reinvent” themselves
So, how I did it? I travel in July (summer), arrive/depart from Milan and for two weeks. I can’t choose the time, as it should only be during my kid and wife school holiday. I fly with Thai Airways and it offer promo ticket to Milan. Two weeks is the maximum stay time for promo ticket.
Next, I will write about how to find promo ticket, itinerary and travel light. Stay tune
